Project title: The influence of land-use and management on nitrogen leaching in two agricultural catchments in China and Denmark

2013-01-18

Description:

The main aim of my work is to develop a modelling tool that is able to quantify the effect of agricultural land use and different management options on the nitrogen (N) leaching in catchments in China and Denmark. My project has the following objectives: (i) to measure N leaching and crop production from wheat/maize field experiments in China, (ii) to parameterise the Daisy module in relation to crop growth and N leaching for wheat and maize based on existing and new results from lab and field experiments in Denmark and China, (iii) to characterise typical soil types within the two chosen catchments in relation to texture, organic matter and soil hydraulic properties, (iv) to simulate a number of typical combinations of cropping systems for the catchments, (v) to perform an upscaling statistical analysis of the simulated results in order to setup two models to predict N leaching on catchment scale, (vi) to perform scenario analysis using the two models to predict N leaching for current and new scenarios.

This study will offer more comprehensive understanding of the importance of different parameters under different soil, crop and climatic condition and their interactions in the Soil-Vegetation-Atmosphere Transfer (SVAT) system, and it will be helpful for suggesting cost-effective management methods to reduce diffuse N-pollution of the aquatic environment. My work is part of a large project between the Sino-Danish Center of Education and Research in Copenhagen and the Chinese Academy of Science in Beijing.
